Behind The Chair

Athena Macy is a licensed hair professional with a lifelong passion for hair and healthy hair care. Her journey began in childhood, shaped by family, curiosity, and a love for learning. One of her fondest influences was her eldest Aunt Chiffon, a hairstylist who introduced Athena to femininity by gifting her first perfume set, mini skirt, purses, and even platform stiletto heels from her closet.

At age four, her aunt combed out her locs, saying, “Don’t you want to wear pretty hairstyles?” Once home, Athena’s mom had to deal with a tender-headed little girl with a head full of hair. Her first silk press was from her father during his time in barbering school. She was intrigued by how soft and curly her hair was. But one day, overwhelmed, Athena ran away crying and hid in her closet so she wouldn’t have to get her hair done. The next morning, it was time for school, and prissy little Macy didn’t want to go without her hair styled. In fourth grade, she styled her own hair for the first time. From there, Athena spent weekends at the beauty supply store, gathering products and learning from YouTube tutorials. By middle school, she and her best friend would braid each other’s hair, and then other girls’ hair for money to spend at Lenox Mall.

In her senior year of high school, a stylist noticed her customer service skills and she began working alongside her and other stylist at The Color Den Hair Studio, where she honed her skills in professionally caring for natural hair. She learned the importance of technique, patience, and using the right products to preserve the integrity of each client’s hair.

Upon receiving her cosmetology license, Athena opened The Real House of Growth in 2023. This creative and exclusive space is dedicated to intentional, expert-driven hair care.
